H. Lowell Oakley, Jr., CPA, CPEC, is a shareholder of Thomas, Knight, Trent, King and
Company. In addition to his client responsibilities, Lowell serves as
shareholder in charge
of the Profit Enhancement Group and practice development for the firm. He graduated from
East Carolina University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and
Accounting. Lowell joined the firm in 1983 after working in international accounting
and finance for the The Wall Street Journal, a Fortune 500 company owned by Dow
Jones & Company. Lowell works closely with a wide variety of privately held companies
and individuals in the areas of profit enhancement consulting, audit and accounting,
taxation, merger and acquisitions, management advisory services and personal financial
planning. He has developed an in-depth understanding of services for construction
contractors and subcontractors, real estate developers, manufacturing and retail, health
care, service companies, and publishing.
In 1999, Lowell was the first in North Carolina to be designated as a certified profit
enhancement consultant (CPEC) by the Institute of Profit Advisors. The Institute is a one
of a kind national organization dedicated to enhance profits, empower efficiency in
business processes and increase shareholder value. Lowell's designation is the highest the
institute offers. It certifies that he has demonstrated his ability as a "profit
coach" in the areas listed above, and has completed rigorous training and education
at the Institute designed to help businesses increase profits and shareholder value.
Lowell is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
(AICPA), the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, Institute of
Profit Advisors, Practice Development Institute's Construction and Health Care Advisors,
AICPA's Tax Planning and Advising for Closely Held Business Certificate program and is
registered as a certified public accountant in the state of New Jersey. He also has been
active in his community serving as an officer of the Jaycees and Durham Arts Council,
member of the Exchange Club, Home Builders Association, Chamber of Commerce, and
Croasdaile Country Club.
He frequently provides seminars to business and civic groups on such topics as
understanding financial statements, maximizing cash flow, personal financial planning and
lectures in accounting and finance for Duke University's continuing education program. A
native North Carolinian, Lowell enjoys golf, horseback riding and travel. He and his wife,
Scarlett are actively involved in their church and raising their son, Lowell III, and
daughter, Lydia. The Oakleys reside in Durham.
