Many brands, when going global, in order to quickly grow the market, habitually cover all categories and frantically expand SKUs, putting a large number of products in front of consumers to choose from.

This approach has indeed produced many success stories, but if your funds and manpower are limited, you might as well try a different way of thinking:

Subtract from your product line, keep refining and iterating, and you can still retain customers and reap long-term profits.

The brand we're talking about todayFurbo, has taken exactly this kind of unconventional path.

It did not follow the trend of expanding its product line, but instead has spent ten years consistently focusing on the pet camera niche. With only three core products, it achieved annual sales of $29 million (over RMB 190 million).

And its products have long ranked first in Amazon's pet camera category in sales, selling one every 10 seconds on average, and accumulating more than 20,000 user reviews.

Many people will be curious. With only three products, how do you make the business reach this scale? Then with this question, keep reading.

Born from the founder's real pet ownership pain point

Like many startup brands, Furbo was born from the founder's personal experience.

Founder Mr. Zhang and his wife raised a dog named Gobi. Every time the couple left for work, Gobi, left alone at home, would show strong separation anxiety, making them feel both worried and guilty.

Unable to bear seeing their dog's anxious eyes, the couple surveyed over a thousand pet owners and found that separation anxiety is common in dual-income pet-owning families. But at that time, ordinary surveillance cameras on the market could only view footage and could not interact with pets.

So, in 2014, the two founded the Furbo brand and officially started product development.

They worked with veterinarians and pet behavior trainers to refine the interaction logic, determined to create a pet-specific camera that could remotely toss treats and feed, and support two-way voice conversations, rather than a simple revamp of a security camera.

Breaking out through crowdfunding, third-party platforms + independent site continued to gain momentum

In April 2016, the first-generation Furbo dog camera officially launched on the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform.

The project's original goal was only $50,000, but it ultimately exceeded the target by 906%, raising $511,000, setting a new crowdfunding record in the pet category at that time and making a name for itself in the industry.

In the same year, the brand entered Amazon US, and the first-generation product, with features such as 1080P HD, night vision support, two-way voice, and remote treat tossing, quickly won the love of many pet-owning families.

During Prime Day in 2017, it also saw an explosion, with sales reaching 500 times the daily level, topping Amazon's pet camera category BS list and becoming a hit in the US market.

It can be said that Amazon is the core battlefield for brands to cold-start, create hit products, and accumulate massive user reviews.

But Furbo is very smart. Even though its business was booming, it did not bet only on a single platform.

In addition to Amazon, it also simultaneously entered pet vertical e-commerce platforms such as Chewy and Wayfair, continuously reaching precise pet-owning audiences and accumulating brand users.

Not only that, Furbo also built an independent site as an important channel.

Compared with third-party platforms, an independent site has a higher gross margin and can directly accumulate user data. Its operations are not constrained by the rules of platforms such as Amazon, and it has gradually become an important stronghold for brands to build private domains and earn high profits.

According to an interview with the founder couple, by 2017, Furbo had already expanded its business to 12 countries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and annual revenue had successfully crossed the threshold of ten million US dollars.

For ten years, it has focused on 3 SKUs.

At this point, other brands might choose to continue expanding product categories, but Furbo went against the grain and adhered to a minimalist product strategy.

On the one hand, it continuously iterated the dog camera and strengthened AI capabilities, upgrading the product from a simple pet companionship device to a pet health manager.

With AI, it identifies abnormal behaviors such as pets barking continuously, running back and forth, vomiting, and frequent licking, provides early warnings of health risks, and also opened up online veterinary consultation services.

In addition to the dog camera product, the brand only added the Mini basic model and the 360° cat camera, extending from the dog track to cat owners, with only these three core products.

Of course, Furbo's profitability does not rely solely on hardware sales; it also has a money-making channel, namely the Furbo Dog Nanny subscription service.

Hardware is only the entry point. Subscription services such as cloud storage and AI pet behavior analysis that users continue to pay for after purchasing the device constitute a long-term and stable source of profit for the brand. This business development model of hardware + cloud subscription has also been proven effective by the market.

According to data released by a cross-border vertical industry media outlet, Furbo's full-year sales in 2023 reached 29 million US dollars (equivalent to more than 190 million RMB).

Among them, the annual sales of the independent site channel (including hardware and subscription revenue) were approximately 15.27 million US dollars; the annual sales of the Amazon channel were approximately 14.21 million US dollars.

According to the official website, the brand's global user base has now exceeded 1 million, which can be described as securing its position as a benchmark brand for pet smart hardware going overseas.

Use social media to publish real usage scenarios to plant seeds with potential users.

Whether it is a heartwarming clip of the owner remotely feeding snacks to their pet and having two-way voice interaction with their fur baby, or a pet owner sharing a cute moment of their pet alone at home.

Products such as pet cameras themselves easily inspire users to spontaneously create UGC content and are naturally suited to dissemination on social platforms like TikTok; the Furbo brand also seized the value of social media operations early on.

On TikTok, it built an official account @Furbo Pet Camera, which currently has 101,000 followers and a total of 2.9 million likes.

The account's content strategy avoids stiff hard product ads. After all, a good product cannot dispel consumer concerns just by listing features; only by presenting real home usage scenarios can it move users.

Especially on a platform like TikTok, which values content and strong emotional resonance, this approach is particularly effective.

Among them, the most typical video was posted on 2023.6.26:

In the video, the dog's continuous barking triggered the device alarm, so the owner noticed the danger and handled it in time, avoiding a bigger disaster.

Ultimately, this video exceeded 1.6 million views and received 51,500 likes, attracting a large number of users to stop and watch and discuss the product's value in the comments.

This kind of real event has strong appeal in itself; while watching, users naturally labeled it as professional and reliable.

In addition to continuously operating the official account to build up followers, Furbo also broadly cooperates with vertical influencers to acquire customers. The brand does not limit itself by influencer follower size; whether it is a novice blogger with a few hundred followers or a big V with millions of followers, all are within the scope of cooperation.

For example, TikTok influencer @Lisa Van Wagoner, who has only 232 followers, once posted a short video with the theme “If you have a dog obsessed with the Furbo camera, please raise your hand”.

The content is very simple: it just records the cute scene of their dog being full of curiosity about the pet camera, paired with multiple cute screenshots. Yet this one piece of content has received 1.4 million views so far, and the total number of likes is as high as 217,600.

This also confirms: never underestimate the potential of niche influencers. As long as the content is catchy enough, even with a very small follower base, you can create a viral hit with millions of views.

Conclusion

Looking at the development path of the Furbo brand, it is not hard to see that several decisions were very correct. If you are also planning to go global, or are going through a period of confusion in operations, these strategies may be of great help to you:

Strategy One:Do not rush to expand categories; continuously iterate and upgrade product performance, and make good use of the hardware + subscription business model, which can also generate profits continuously.

Strategy Two:Do not make the channel too single; multiple channels each perform their own duties, so if one point has a problem, you will not lose the whole game.

Strategy Three:Do not focus on finding top influencers with large follower bases; as long as the content is infectious enough, spread will happen naturally.
